East Side Gallery – Spotlight: Art vs. Monument?

Max. 10 participants, English language – The East Side Gallery was built in 1990 to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall. Over the years, the wall crumbled and the colors peeled. In 2009, everything was put back to square one. The porous masonry was repaired and all the artworks were almost completely replaced. Only one original from 1990 has survived to this day. The re-creation of the monument is still being discussed today.

The tour looks at how the artists copied, reinterpreted or recreated their images 25 years after the East Side Gallery was built and how they view the gallery today: Is it a place of public, ephemeral art or an unalterable monument? They will discuss the significance of public art and the question of what our society remembers and what is worthy of being a monument.
